essential resource for the tea enthusiast
Oct 14, 2008We are so incredibly lucky to have Chaikhana in Santa Cruz. I would normally expect to have to drive into The City to find a place like this. I imagine Chaikhana has attracted traffic in the reverse direction. While specializing in Pu-ehr, Chaikhana carries a delightful collection of green, white, oolong, black, and red teas, mostly from China but also from Japan, some of them being certified organic. Even with the extensive selection of teas and the impressive collection of tea-wares, it is the atmosphere that keeps me coming back. It feels like a sacred space, which is a tremendous accomplishment for a retail shop. Chaikhana is where I go when I want to give a gift to myself. If you have never heard of Pu-erh, ask Davi, the proprietor. He has a wealth of information on the subject. If you are looking for a place to relax and drink tea, ask Davi about the Empty Boat, also in Santa Cruz.

Great Shop!
Mar 28, 2008Chaikhana is a small shop, but jam packed with interesting tea related objects. I've only been there a few times, but they seem to be more concentrated on chinese teas than japanese. They have a great selection of yixing ware, and yixing "ornaments." One of the "ornaments"squirts out a jet of water when hot water is poured on it, and is a great addition to anyone's gong fu table.

Tea!
Dec 20, 2007Davi, the proprietor, first introduced me to pu-erh a number of years ago. Pu-erh is the elixir-- an aged tea from China, it tastes a little of the caves it was aged in and goes down smooth like a good whiskey. His other teas are fantastic as well, and he nearly always has tastings going on. The shop is good place to find teas you love and discover new ones.
